It’s that time of year again when cooler temperatures settle in, and the trees begin their transition from summer to fall with the display of brightly colored foliage. It’s fall in Kentucky! One of the best ways to experience the fall season is with a visit to the Land Between the Lakes. With 151,000 acres of mainly hardwood forest, Land Between the Lakes in the fall is a spectacular time to visit with autumn colors bursting out at almost every corner you turn.
What you will see
Different species of trees and shrubs give off certain colors. For bright shades of red, look for blackgums, sumacs, and Virginia creepers. For brilliant orange colors, keep your eyes out for sassafras and for delightful shades of yellow, look for tulip poplars and hickories. And for the most vibrant colors of yellows, reds, and oranges, look for maples and sweetgums.
When to see the fall foliage
The best time to experience the Land Between the Lakes in the fall is mid to late October. The first sign of fall usually shows around the first of October with the end of the season reaching the first part of November.

Hike or bike
Take a hike or enjoy a long bike ride through the designated trail system of the Land Between the Lakes. Immerse yourself in colors of red, orange, and yellow with the 2.2-mile hike around scenic Hematite Lake. Or for a slightly longer hike, take the 4.5-mile trail at Honker Lake to enjoy a canvas of color.
